Program areas at Friends of Vallarta Botanical Gardens AC
The Vallarta Botanical Gardens continued its programs in Horticulture (plant propagation, plant collection development, display development and maintenance), Public Education and Plant Conservation as well as developing its new role in Environmental Leadership and Conservation for the Cabo Corrientes Region. In June of 2022 the Gardens received the prestigious Garden of Excellence Award from the American Association of Public Gardens (APGA). This was the first time this award has been given to a garden outside of the United States. And highlights the noticeable quality of the garden and its programs recognizing it as a world class institution. Staff and Board attended the annual meeting if the APGA in Portland to receive the award.
new computers and updated membership management software, a new electricity transformer, electricity generators and submersible pumps for use during storms and rapid repair of storm damage.Public Education and Visitor numbers: There were 37,638 visits in 2022 and had increased as tourism rebounded after the pandemic.Visits by local school groups resumed at both the elementary and university levels. Festivals held to highlight seasonal changes included the Vallarta Bird and Nature Festival in February, Hummingbird Week in May and the International Butterfly Festival in September. Horticulture and CollectionsOne of the first conservatories to be constructed, The Holstein Conservatory was remodeled and renovated this year and received a new higher roof and Cantera support pillars to bring it up to grade with the character and quality of surrounding buildings like the Cactus House and Hacienda. Wider aisles and increased height improved access and comfort of visitors and expanded display space for this prominent entryway to the south gardens and buildings. Seasonal displays and maintenance of hummingbird and butterfly attracting plants continued as well as tree maintenance and clean up from hurricane Nora as well as repair and refurbishment of paths to improve safety and visitor access.Needed equipment for maintenance and repairs of the facilities was added including
