Program areas at Friends of A Studio in the Woods
Artistic residencies provide A tranquil haven for artists to work uninterrupted and provide related public programming. A Studio in the Woods looks to facilitate A meaningful relationship between artists and the community. the people, environment, and culture of southeastern Louisiana influence our residents, and in turn artists and their work have A significant impact on the region. in advance of their arrival, staff assesses each artists needs and begins to build relationships with the community resources and collaborators that will be crucial in the evolution of their projects. Residencies are open to artists of all disciplines including visual, musician/composing, performance, literary, new media, and interdisciplinary. Both established and emerging artists are encouraged to apply, but students are not eligible. A rigorous work ethic, dedication to public engagement and demonstrated ability to work with colleagues and wider audiences are expected.
Kids in the Woods summer day camp interweaves arts with weeklong intensives in environmental sciences. At kids in the Woods camp, youth 7-11 years old learn about their relationship to the natural environment. Through hands-on arts activities children use both artistic and scientific skills to observe, identify and collect natural materials and processes. They then record their experiences through visual arts such as clay, paint, drawing, collage, and sculpture. They develop literary arts through journaling, poetry and storytelling. Campers also engage with performing arts through movement, music, and creating their own plays. Kids in the Woods camp features guests artists and scientists, providing deeper dives into subject matter.
