Program areas at Foundations

Foundations is the fiscal sponsor to the campaign for grade level reading (cglr). Cglr conducts activities that align with the mission and purpose of the organization. Cglr seeks to disrupt generational poverty by mobilizing communities to find solutions for one of the major obstacles in the pathway out of poverty failure to read proficiently by the end of third grade. Since its launch in 2012, the glr communities network has grown to include more than 350 communities, representing 45 states, the district of columbia, puerto rico, the u.s. virgin islands and two canadian provinces sponsored by 5,200+ local organizations, institutions and agencies and supported by 500+ state and local funders, including 200+ united ways. The counties served by glr coalitions are home to 28.6 million children ages 09 years old, 63.7% of the total u.s. population in this age range. Within this group, the counties served by cglr communities house 10.4 million children in grades k3, or 70% of the u.s. total, including millions who are at risk of experiencing significant learning loss given the current reality of closures and crisis schooling.
The office of program and innovation provided professional learning, leadership and instructional coaching, curriculum review and redesign, interim leadership support and special education support to 27 charter and district schools serving over 20,000 students. In 2022, we provided virtual as well as in-person professional learning sessions to educators across the nation, serving thousands of teachers, school leaders, and afterschool educators. In 2022, we also developed and implemented highly effective professional learning series to address the needs of paraeducators. Our team designed and implemented highly successful, evidence-based learning recovery programs that served hundreds of students in charter and district schools in the greater philadelphia area. As a result of our high dosage tutoring programs, hundreds of students in schools that we served demonstrated notable gains in math and reading skills.
The center for afterschool and expanded learning provided online webinar trainings to an estimated 1,800 participants from all 50 states across the nation, the district of columbia, puerto rico, and parts of the world. This year, the center has distributed 190 resources to afterschool practitioners nationwide. Additionally, the center operated 15 afterschool programs involving 2,800 elementary through 12th grade students in philadelphia schools.
