Program areas at Food Bank for New York City

Food distribution. In fy22, Food Bank distributed 114.7 million pounds of Food equivalent to 96 million meals. In addition, Food Bank was awarded funds to administer for another 12.2 million pounds (equivalent to 10 million meals) through nys nourish subawards and the one-time nys restaurant resiliency program. Also the war in ukraine had an impact on our nyc communities as an influx of refugees reached nyc in april/may of 2022. Food Bank responded with mobile distributions into highest needs areas, and worked with our pantry partners, community leaders, the mayor's office of immigrant affairs to establish "crisis response" plans for these and other emergencies where Food is required.additionally, Food Bank worked to strengthen its network of emergency Food providers by supporting them with $3.5 million in operating grants, $575,000 in equipment and launched a masterclass seminar series to build ongoing partner agency operational capacity covering fundraising, advocacy, leadership, sustainability and project management.
Income support services: Food Bank's income support services provides free tax preparation services and financial workshops and counseling. In fy22, Food Bank's tax services facilitated 18,000 tax returns totaling $35.8 million in refunds generating an equivalent 1.3 million meals and a community economic impact of more than $55 million.
Nutrition education: in fy22, Food Bank for New York City continued with virtual learning curriculum and virtual workshops and restored pre-pandemic in-person activities as circumstances permitted.
Community kitchen and Food pantry: opened in 1984, the community kitchen and Food pantry of west harlem (the "kitchen") is a resource and service center for the community of west harlem. The kitchen operates a congregate meal program; a consumer-choice Food pantry and, a program connecting individuals and families to income support programs, including supplemental nutrition assistance program, free tax-return preparation services, and rent, mortgage and utility assistance.
Benefits access: in fy22, Food Bank facilitated $35,942,000 in snap benefits with a value of 8.8 million meals and economic impact of more than $55 million dollars in nyc.
