Description
Defend Our Health envisions a world where everyone has equal access to safe food and drinking water, healthy homes, and products that are toxic-free and climate-friendly. We stand up for this right wherever it is threatened. In 2021, we collaborated with farmers and well-users in Maine to address the PFAS contamination crisis, developing innovative policy solutions to combat toxic chemicals. We championed policies that made Maine a national leader in the effort.

Program areas at Defend Our Health

We prevented plastic pollution and reduced human exposure to PFAS, the 'forever chemicals,' in our food and water. We persuaded industry to eliminate toxic chemicals known as phthalates from food packaging, and called on US EPA to end racial disparities in exposure. We measured two cancer-causing chemicals in plastic-bottled beverages, and called for safer alternatives. We profiled hazards of PET plastic used for packaging and polyester clothing. We led passage of first-in-the-nation policies to ban sludge spreading on farms and provide economic relief and medical monitoring to PFAS-impacted farmers and well-owners. We helped the Passamaquoddy Tribe gain access to safe drinking water and secured $500,000 in state funds to pay for water treatment systems for low-income families with arsenic in wells.
