E.w. Sparrow Hospital has, since its inception in 1896, provided care to people regardless of their race, creed, sex, national origin, handicap, age, or ability to pay. Sparrow is a non-profit community-governed Hospital and the flagship of Sparrow Health system, a comprehensive integrated Health delivery system committed within its resources to improving the Health status of all people throughout the mid-michigan region by providing quality, compassionate care to everyone, every time. E.w. Sparrow Hospital is a 623-bed, major teaching Hospital (affiliated with Michigan state university's colleges of osteopathic medicine, human medicine and nursing) and the most comprehensive, acute care center in mid-michigan. Sparrow is the regional medical center for: - pediatrics - cancer care, including radiation therapy - trauma care - neurological care - high-risk obstetrics - neonatal intensive care - behavioral Health - cardiovascular services in the first six months of 2023, Sparrow treated over 14,000 inpatients, provided services to nearly 77,000 emergency medicine patients, over 44,600 urgent care and walk-in care patients, and conducted over 21,000 video visits. Today's Sparrow Health system blends the knowledge and expertise of over 1,1550 physicians, nearly 8,900 caregivers and about 1,000 volunteers with the most advanced technology, serving as a comprehensive Health system for a core eight-county population and beyond. In addition, more people choose Sparrow for their maternity needs (over 3,500 deliveries annually), rehabilitation, and emergency treatment than any other Hospital in mid-michigan. Sparrow has achieved a national benchmark in quality care for mothers and babies, as mid-michigan's only baby-friendly Hospital, a global program of the world Health organization (who) and the united nations children's fund (unicef). Sparrow has undertaken a variety of measures to improve maternal and infant Health. An outpatient breastfeeding clinic supporting breastfeeding mothers and infants is held twice a week in our pediatrics subspecialty clinic. Sparrow also sponsors the baby caf, a community resource free of charge to nursing mothers to obtain breastfeeding support, as well as peer support from other new mothers. At the same time and with the help of generous businesses and community members, Sparrow has also been able to launch programs like feeding your growing family, which addresses food insecurity among pregnant mothers by offering pre/post-natal nutrition counseling, monthly food boxes delivered to their homes, a healthy cooking kitchen toolkit and connection to additional support resources. Sparrow partners with numerous organizations in support of Health equity and access to care resources, including the healthy capital counties coalition, greater Lansing food bank, capital area Health alliance, and local public Health departments. Sparrow works with university of Michigan pediatric ophthalmology to provide an eye clinic weekly in our pediatrics subspecialty clinic. Sparrow also partners with the ingham county Health department and healthy start to provide a free monthly class for Health department patients, including a tour of Sparrow labor and delivery, and information about what to expect when you come to the Hospital to have your baby. Sparrow also has a partnership with Michigan medicine (the university of Michigan) to oversee the Sparrow children's center. This allows broadened pediatric specialty services for the region and help ensure families stay close to home, instead of traveling great distances to seek care for their children. Sparrow Health system's reach extends far beyond the acute care setting of the Hospital. There are many ways our staff proactively supports the community, especially those who have the greatest need. Because of Sparrow's commitment, the people of mid Michigan have access to the full range of comprehensive acute care services and the latest medical advances without traveling great distances. These services are available to all mid Michigan residents, regardless of their ability to pay. Providing access to covid-19 testing and vaccines: Sparrow was one of the first hospitals in Michigan to create and offer covid tests to inpatients and has performed more than 930,000 covid tests throughout the Health system since march 2020. Today it offers a drive-thru service hub for blood tests and covid testing. Sparrow is also a national leader in providing access to covid-19 vaccines to people from throughout the state. Sparrow has given nearly 175,000 covid vaccines. Providing access to primary care: Sparrow recognizes that if we are to achieve our vision of being a nationally recognized leader in quality and the patient experience, we have a responsibility to take the lead in fundamentally transforming healthcare in Michigan. To address the challenges of increasing prevalence of chronic disease and an aging population, to improve the quality of care and the patient experience while also ensuring greater affordability for payors, Sparrow needs to implement profound changes in how care is provided. Sparrow is committed to seeking new ways to partner with quality care providers to create greater alignment around improved quality and patient experience, work jointly to develop clinical guidelines to ensure the highest quality of care for patients who need to be transferred to different levels of care and to ensure that care is always delivered in the best quality and most cost-advantageous clinical setting as close to the patient's home as possible. Sparrow Health system includes community hospitals -- Sparrow carson Hospital, Sparrow clinton Hospital, Sparrow eaton Hospital, Sparrow ionia Hospital, and Sparrow specialty Hospital. The Sparrow herbert-herman cancer center features a multi-disciplinary team approach that puts the patient at the center of everything we do. Patients see a team of clinicians under one roof and in one visit. The facility is twice the size of the previous cancer center and includes new and local artwork designed to provide a healing atmosphere; an open, light-filled area for patients receiving chemotherapy treatment; a retail boutique; and space for support groups. The plaza building that houses the cancer center is also home to Sparrow thoracic and cardiovascular institute (tci), the leading cardiac care practice in the region. Sparrow community care - a non-profit entity comprising the former Sparrow medical supply and Sparrow home care units - and Sparrow laboratories and Sparrow pharmacy plus round out Sparrow Health system's network of facilities and primary care services. They are designed to provide quality, convenient, cost effective Health care to the people of mid Michigan. Emergency preparedness: Sparrow has distinguished itself as a recognized leader in emergency preparedness. The Hospital views preparedness as an ongoing process led by a multidisciplinary team that involves all aspects of Hospital operations, including medical and non-medical services. Drills are conducted year-round in collaboration with local, state and federal agencies to ensure Sparrow is prepared for any disaster, whether it is the result of a terrorist act or a natural disaster. Sparrow's emergency preparedness committee regularly tests the Hospital's response skills independent of any agency or governing body. The Hospital also works with local government agencies, including the police department, fire department, and public Health department to coordinate a planned response in the event of a true emergency. Supporting our community and neighborhoods: Sparrow is the unquestioned leader in mid-michigan in providing healthcare services and promoting health-related activities. With 10 outings in the first six-months of 2023,w Sparrow's mobile Health clinic saw nearly 90 patients, and sent nearly dozens of referrals to Sparrow smg and specialty care providers, along with resource coordinators. The clinic provided access to healthcare in many of mid-michigan's medically underserved areas. Patients received Health screenings, immunizations, and access to a primary care physician at no cost. Sparrow provides first-aid services at many special events, including Michigan state university football games, Lansing lugnuts baseball games and the city of Lansing's annual common ground music festival. Sparrow provides Health education and learning opportunities to a variety of audiences. We continued our be well in the kitchen program, featuring classes about nutrition and healthy cooking for youths, seniors, and others in the community. The program also utilizes our demonstration kitchen in the gathering place at Sparrow. Sparrow also offered the feelin' good mileage club to over 100 elementary schools in our region along with the Sparrow Michigan mile - a one mile fun run with over 1,200 youth participants.
