Program areas at Detroit Public Theatre
While live Theatre was working to come back from the covid-19 pause, the Detroit Public Theatre continued to find ways to connect with audiences. The organization produced "thurgood" by george stevens jr. outdoors at new center park in Detroit. The organization was also able to collaborate with harlem9 to produce the "48hours in Detroit" festival that had been postponed in 2020 due to covid-19. The organization collaborated with the charles h. wright museum of african american history to produce "Detroit '67" in the summer of 2022. The organization also hosted a block party for the community to celebrate the opening of the new theater space in july 2022.
The Detroit Public Theatre collaborated with the Detroit Public schools community district to bring students from cass technical high school and renaissance high school to see the organization's production of "Detroit '67" at the charles h. wright museum of african american history. This was accompanied by an in-classroom lesson, with Detroit Public Theatre teaching artists and a post-show discussion.
While unable to be physically in the prison facilities due to covid-19, the shakespeare in prison program continued to serve incarcerated people by creating shakespeare activity packs. The program continued to work with formerly incarcerated people through its re-entry program, shakespeare reclaimed. Shakespeare reclaimed provides opportunities for personal and professional development, including work opportunities with the Detroit Public Theatre as independent contractors.
