Program areas at Crude Accountability Incorporated
Crude Accountability is a member of the Prove They Are Alive campaign, which documents enforced disappearances in Turkmenistan and holds accountable the government of the country for this gross human rights violation, which is paid for with revenues from oil and gas development--the main revenue of the country. Crude Accountability works on the international level with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the United Nations, international financial institutions, and other governmental and intergovernmental institutions to inform the international community about this crime. We also research the corrupt and kleptocratic linkages between the government official responsible for enforced disappearances and for brokering the oil and gas deals that finance this violation of human rights.
Crude Accountability researches corruption and kleptocracy in the oil and gas sectors in Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan. We produce reports and publish information on this topic, including two reports written in 2021. One of these was on kleptocracy in Turkmenistan and the other was on violations of environmental and social norms, including corruption, in the oil and gas sector in Azerbaijan.
Crude Accountability works in the Central Asian countries of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan monitoring investments by Chinese companies in the oil and gas sector. We conducted community monitoring, environmental and social analysis and advocacy, and worked with local experts to understand the impacts on communities in areas affected by the development of the oil and gas industry.
General program support from donors and individual contributors enables us to respond to environmental issues as needed in the field and at home.
Crude Accountability works within the rubric of the Civic Solidarity Platform on issues related to human rights and climate justice in the OSCE region.
