Council on Addiction Prevention and Education of Dutchess County

Providing evidence based Prevention Education and counseling services to Dutchess County youth and families surrounding issues related to at risk behavior, in particular the misuse/abuse of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs (atod). The organization offers various programs and services including the following: alive at 25this is a court-mandated, four-and-a-half-hour, evidence-based driver's awareness course. The class is designed by the national safety Council for young drivers ages 16-24. Participants gain awareness, develop safety strategies, and build a foundation for healthy and responsible decision-making. Cape's Prevention educators are certified by the national safety Council. This is a fee-based program.blindspotsan educational intervention (designed for parents and guardians) that allows participants to explore a model teen bedroom and identify paraphernalia and other possible indicators of substance use/misuse. Follow-up includes a presentation to review and discuss the various paraphernalia in the model room. Health and wellness college & community consortiuma group of representatives from colleges in the mid-hudson valley area meets quarterly to discuss common challenges and to come up with strategies for dealing with a number of Addiction issues, including substance and alcohol use.peer engagement specialiststhe peer specialists will assist individuals and families facing the substance use disorder/addiction, by helping them navigate the existing systems and services that can lead to recovery.prevention Education programsprovide evidence-based presentations in schools, colleges, community-based organizations, and businesses throughout the County related to drinking and driving, underage drinking, alcohol and substance use, and gambling. This program also works with the school-based sadd chapters.prevention Education & counseling program (project success)provides licensed counselors in 4 districts and 10 schools offering substance use/addiction Prevention Education and counseling to students, faculties, families, and communities through individual and group counseling, information and referral services, and family communication programs.local schools that currently offer our Prevention counseling services include john jay senior high school, van wyck junior high school, rck high school, wappingers junior high school, millbrook middle/high school, red hook high school, arlington high school, and dover plains middle/high school.professional Education programa series of substance use-related trainings sponsored by the Council and certified by nys oasas. Cape is a nys oasas certified Prevention provider and trainer.screening brief intervention and referral to treatment (sbirt) (teen intervene)an evidence-based early intervention model used as a tool to assess at-risk individuals, and where appropriate, refer to treatment. This intervention uses motivational interviewing as a means to engage individuals in identifying their needs and seeking the level of assistance that they require to manage substance use issues. This can be a fee-based program.teen driving: a family affaira locally developed program that brings the victim impact panel model into local high schools as part of the student's application for their parking permit, which allows them to drive to school. The program mandates that both the student and a parent attend this modified vip, which includes victims of substance-related crashes as well as representatives from the district attorney's office, the insurance industry and the medical community. Parents and students gain an understanding of the serious legal, medical, insurance, and emotional costs of driving distracted and of driving under the influence.teen intervenean evidence-based program for teenagers (age 12-19) who exhibit mild to moderate problems associated with alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. Motivational interviewing techniques guide this intervention to develop/improve communication and coping skills, and to educate students about the harmful effects of substance use on health. Too good for drugs & violence (tgfd/tgfv)this fifteen-week, evidence-based drug and violence Prevention curriculum (designed by the mendez foundation) focuses on developing young people's social and emotional learning through fun and interactive lessons. These lessons aim to reduce risk factors associated with substance use disorder and increase protective factors, such as pro-social attitudes, healthy relationships, resistance to substance use, conflict management, and resistance to negative peer pressure and influence. Students build self-confidence and skill-set to make healthy decisions and achieve their goals.victim impact panel (vip)a program that serves the entire community by providing a monthly forum on the painful consequences of driving under the influence given by those whose lives have been forever changed by an impaired driver. People convicted of dwi and dwai are mandated by the courts to attend vip, with the goal of reducing recidivism. This is a fee-based program, available in both english and spanish.
