Description
Community Action of Eastern Iowa respectfully partners with people to improve their health, finances, and education. It provides a comprehensive development program for preschool children through Head Start, where enrolled children receive screenings for developmental, social-emotional status, hearing, vision, and communication. Additionally, it offers weatherization resources such as insulation, minor structural repair, testing and other items for low-income households. Trained staff visit each qualifying home and create a plan that will lead to the most effective solutions.

Program areas at Community Action of Eastern Iowa

Head start - provides a comprehensive development program for preschool children, substantially all of whom come from low-income families.enrolled children received screenings including developmental, social-emotional status, hearing, vision, communication skills, nurtitional status and blood lead level screenings. The organization has head start centers in cedar, clinton, muscatine and scott counties. Early head start services are provided to pregnant women, and families with infants and toddlers.
Child care resource and referral - provided child-care related assistance to qualifying low-income participants. The organization assisted families that did not qualify for head start or wanted to explore other options in finding qualified child care providers either in centers or with home child care providers.
Low income home energy assistance - provides assistance to qualifying low-income households in paying their heating costs. During the fiscal year ending october 31, 2022, 28,858 households/individuals received assistance.
Child and adult care food programs - provides assistance to meet food and nutritional needs of qualifying low-income participants. During the year ended october 31, 2022, the organization provided assisstance to 8 centers.
Weatherization - provides resources including insulation, minor structural repair, testing and other items for weatherizing homes of qualifying low income households. Trained staff visit each qualifying home and put together a plan that will lead to the most energy savings. During the year ended october 31, 2022, 72 homes were weatherized.
Community services block grant - provides support for outreach, general administrative and other expenses in carrying out program activities not funded by specific awards.
Family development and self-sufficiency program (fadss) - provides development and self-sufficiency services to familes in the state's family investment program who are determined to be at risk of long-term welfare dependency.
Other Community Action programs - providing various other forms of assistance to qualifying low-income individuals and families.
