Voting rights and democracy:color of change continued to use the power of our members' voices and the media to permanently reshape the debate on voting rights and voter suppression efforts that disproportionately impact black communities. To that end we launched a pilot civic engagement digital platform that built black voter engagement through local, state and national outreach. Through a mix of digital tools and new media this tool allows volunteers to engage with black voters and other volunteers. We also created and led campaigns that mobilized large numbers of black people and allies to assert their political power to fight voter suppression. This included local, state and national campaigns.
Criminal justice:over the past year, color of change has led partners across the country - organizers, lawyers, policy experts, and communicators - to continue to hold prosecutors accountable and accelerate prosecutor reform on a national level. In 2020 in particular we pushed for legislation and policy change to move towards decarceration including decriminalizing poverty and stopping unnecessary prosecutions.
Culture and media engagement:color of change played a unique and effective role in transforming the impact of media in america by focusing on systemic change in the areas where we can have the most influence. We position ourselves in between media producers and the harmful media vehicles they would create by disrupting the chain of production that allows harmful media content to exist in the first place. At the same time, we push back and work to take existing harmful content off the air while supporting and promoting complex, humanizing, and varied portrayals of people of color.
Training and organizingwe offered training to local organizers through webinars, digital workshops and socially distant outdoor gatherings. Our trainings were designed to be interactive learning experiences. We begin with a discussion of best practices in online organizing. We review examples of successful digital campaigns and explain how to plan press events, the importance of hinging campaigns on storytelling and give participants practice in crafting narratives that build support for black communities. We model interdependent leadership structure by distributing roles and responsibilities and making action plans for participants. We are mindful of meeting organizers where they are at and work to support and coach them on how to become more effective leaders and build people power to win change that adds real value to people's lives.
Media, democracy and economic justicecolor of change worked to hold companies accountable to their black customers and push back against those enablers who would try to get close to politicians and corporations to gain power and influence. We continued our work to identify and expose harmful economic policies driven by tech platforms and major corporations. We leveraged the voices of our members to build momentum for progressive tax, labor and education policies that meet the needs of our communities and act as a racial justice authority to the political left, as its members have yet to significantly represent or fight for the issues and concerns that affect black people the most.
