Program areas at Chaplains on the Harbor
SHELTER: Our cold weather shelter provides for overnight stays at our community center in Westport. Guests also had access to showers, laundry, case management, and resource connection while at our community center. The shelter operates November 1 through March 31. In 2022 our cold weather shelter served 168 unduplicated guests, and averaged of 15 adult guests nightly.
OUTREACH: In 2022 our Street and Jail Outreach programs visited neighbors on the street and served meals weekly on Thursdays, and visited people in jail on Wednesdays. Weekly we served an average of 50 people on the streets of Grays Harbor County. We visit an average of four people in jail each week.
FARM: In 2022 Harbor Roots Farm employed 4 people in a supportive environment. Employees are able to take care of legal obligations and Outpatient services without it interfering with employment. We also helped some employees to get their driver's license. We also helped some employees to get their driver's license. We provided 15 farm shares where each share may feed 3 to 4 people per week (up to 60 people per week).
Our other programs include Survival Projects, Chaplaincy, Leadership Development, Advocacy, Harbor Roots Farm, and Harbor Eats Food Truck. In carrying out our programs we are engaged in the community. Towards these goals, general program successes and accomplishments include the following. Ten staff members went on a trip to Mississippi to learn about co-ops and to strengthen our ties with others performing the same type of work. Two staff attended an event in Washington DC hosted by the Poor People's Campaign. Two staff attended the National RX Recovery Convention in Atlanta, Georgia. A staff member received the Behavioral Health Services Phoenix Award for being a supporter of those in recovery for several years. We trained 15 peer support counselors in mental health 1st aid, recovery coaching, Crisis Intervention Techniques, and HMIS. Our staff members serve on the Grays Harbor County Board of Public Health and on the Grays Harbor Executive Housing Board. We are part of the Planning Team and providing Education for the 1st Grays Harbor Overdose Awareness Event. We are Members of the Behavioral Health & SUD Consortium. (Revenues are net farm and food truck sales after COGS.)
