Sustainable agrifood systems (sas)previously called sustainable intensification program (sip), the sustainable agrifood systems deliver food security and nutrition for all - without compromising the economic, social and environmental bases - for generations to come. This leads to better and resilient production, better nutrition, a better environment and a better life for all.cimmyt's sustainable agrifood systems work includes discovery and development, to meet a multiplicity of goals: enhance resilience through agricultural production, profit, environmental services, social and human condition. Genetic resources program (grp)cimmyt manages humankind's most diverse maize and wheat collections. It starts with the seed. Cimmyt's germplasm bank, also known as a seed bank, is at the center of cimmyt's crop-breeding research. This remarkable, living catalog of genetic diversity comprises of over 28,000 unique seed collections of maize and 150,000 of wheat.from its breeding programs, cimmyt sends half a million seed packages to 800 partners in 100 countries each year. With researchers and farmers, the center also develops and promotes more productive and precise maize and wheat farming methods and tools that save money and resources such as soil, water, and fertilizer. (continued in schedule o)related research, conservation, and utilization are supported by three units: seed health, biometrics & statistics, and data management. Finally, the seeds of discovery (seed) project analyzes and documents maize and wheat biodiversity and facilitates its use in crop breeding to address current and future production challenges.cimmyt's germplasm research aims to:-conserve, characterize, distribute and use genetic resources.-safely distribute seed.-promote scientific stewardship and ensure open-access to cimmyt's data and derived information.-create quality, open-source software.-develop and validate new tools and methods for gene mining and crop improvement.-build capacity in all the above areas.
Global maize program (gmp)cimmyt develops and distributes improved maize inbred lines and hybrids to partners worldwide. This work improves the food security, incomes and livelihoods of millions of smallholder farmers and their families in the tropics and subtropics of africa, asia, and latin america.the objectives of cimmyt's maize breeding and seed systems work are to:-develop genetically diverse, high-yielding maize inbred lines and hybrids, combining multiple-stress tolerance, nutrient use efficiency, enhanced nutritional quality, and desirable seed production properties for target production zones. (continued in schedule o)-accelerate the rate at which the genetic potential for maize yields increases each year and improve the efficiency of maize breeding operations, through integrated application of modern tools and technologies.-deploy cimmyt-derived improved maize varieties in the tropics through public-private partnerships, while strengthening local maize seed production and delivery systems.-build local capacity-particularly of women and youth-in maize breeding and seed systems through training and knowledge exchange.cimmyt's maize breeding work aims at developing easy-to-produce, best-bet hybrids, elite maize lines, and improved open-pollinated varieties, as well as science-based recommendations for varietal targeting and improved productivity in target regions.in addition to higher grain yield, cimmyt's maize breeding teams focus on:-yield stability in stress-prone environments, through tolerance to drought, heat, and poorly fertile soils.-resistance to major diseases, insect pests, and parasitic weeds.-enhanced nutritional qualities, such as provitamin a, high-kernel zinc, and quality protein maize.this work is supported by cutting-edge tools and technologies, including doubled haploids, molecular markers and high-throughput field-based phenotyping.cimmyt's research and work on maize breeding and seed systems is accomplished through strong public-private partnerships.cimmyt leads the cgiar research program on maize (maize).
