Program areas at Center for Independent Living of South Florida

The foundation of the organization is based on the four core services of: individual and systems advocacy, peer support, Independent Living skills, and information and referral. Around the core foundation we have built a full range of Independent Living support services that promote the organization's mission to accomplish both individual and systems change by creating an environment where opportunities exist for individuals with disabilities to maximize their individual and group potential. We accomplish this by recruiting and training individuals with disabilities to serve on boards, committees, alliances, and coalitions to influence disability policy.
The Center for Independent Living of South Florida Inc. (cilsf) will provide access to services for the deaf, hard of hearing and deaf-blind constituents of miami-dade. The deaf services program aims to provide 77 deaf adults with disabilities help to obtain benefits and services including: soda i security, food stamps, utility assistance, child custody, citizenship, driver's education, asl instruction, housing, day care; and other il services. Information and referrals will be provided to 75 individuals, who will receive american sign language (asl) or tactile sign language for people who are deaf-blind. Two (2) consumer education workshops will be held annually. Program performance will be assessed through the Independent Living plan or a waiver to track achievements of goals. Asl coordination will be tracked through information and referrals services. Satisfaction surveys will be administered.
The adult transition program assists adults with disabilities enrolled at miami dade county public schools (mdcps) vocational education centers to achieve their educational goals, learn self-advocacy skills, and transition to employment. The three md cps vocational education centers are lindsey hopkins technical college, miami lakes educational Center, and robert morgan educational Center and technical college. Students referred by the Florida division of vocational rehabilitation (dvr), teachers, school counselors, and other professionals for remediation of basic skills deficiency will be offered tutoring to increase their reading, language arts and math scores, improve academic standing, passaged exam, and pass any required licensure exam. Pre and post-tests will measure outcomes of students who receive tutoring. Participants will receive self-advocacy skills training to enhance their Independent Living skills and potential for economic self-sufficiency. Participants will also receive advocacy and support to access community resources to address any obstacles to completion of their vocational education program.
Other programs include fee for service and faast.
