Program areas at Center for Immigrant Protection
In 2024, thanks to the incredible support from our community and partner organizations, the Center for Immigrant Protection achieved the following milestones: Continued serving as the USA's first transgender-led, transgender-centered organization led by a team of LGBTQ+ immigrants. Provided support to 1,124 LGBTQIA+ immigrants, far exceeding the projected number of 750. This includes pending cases, new cases, legal consultations, and referrals. Strengthened the California Coalition of Transgender Immigrants with support from California LGBT+ Legislative Caucus to provide statewide support for immigrants and asylees centering LGBTQIA+ immigrants, and further centering our work in San Francisco. Furthered our legal services and advocacy work in co-sponsoring legislative trailblazing laws such as (SAFETY Act) - AB 1955, Protecting Access to Preventative Services (AB 2258), SBX1-1 and SBX1-2. Joined the California Legislative LGBT+ Unity Council to scale our services and mission commitments across the state of California. Took on 73 new asylum cases (63 affirmative and 10 defensive).Continued offering 100% free legal and community services to our clients, including pro bono legal representation for transgender, gender non-conforming, and intersex (TGNCI) defensive cases at San Francisco and Sacramento Immigration Courts. Maintained our 99% approval rate. Had 9 approvals from El Salvador, Russia, Brazil, Mexico, Honduras, and Turkey, including 5 approvals for TGNCI individuals. Thanks to the support of our funders and community, these individuals were able to begin their new lives in safety as their authentic selves. Had 15 Name and Gender Marker Change approvals. Hosted, co-organized, sponsored, or attended 37 events focused on TGNCI Immigrant Community Well-Being. Organized two TGNCI Leadership Development Cohorts, with a total of 23 students. Hosted or sponsored three discussion roundtables address the needs of TGNCI communities in the Bay Area. Provided referral assistance to 108 Global South TGNCI immigrants in the U.S.Scaled SITAL Parivar, the world's largest transgender entrepreneurship program in India, which has helped establish 19 small-scale businesses along with a mutual aid for trans woman Dr. Ruth John Paul to cover her PG medical fees and support international star Sushant Divingkar aka Rani Kohenoor.
