Program areas at Her Health First
Black mothers united (bmu) is a pregnancy support program for african american women in sacramento county. The program was created in 2013 with funding from First 5 sacramento. The program's mission is to increase the number of african american women entering prenatal care early and decrease the number of african american babies born prematurely or at low birth weight. Bmu utilizes a "cultural broker" model that engages members of the Community by providing culturally sensitive and relevant Health navigation services. Cultural brokers, known formally as pregnancy coaches, provide one-on-one case management, home visits, Health education, transportation, and referrals to critical health/social support services to ensure our clients have the healthiest pregnancy and birth outcomes possible. The sierra Health foundation provided funding for expenditures incurred by the sacramento Community due to the public Health emergency with respect to covid-19. In addition to providing direct financial assistance to sacramento residents impacted by covid-19, Her Health First developed and initiated a social media project to advertise a women's Health podcast and documentary web series and educational courses. This enabled african american women to access important Health information from their homes during the pandemic. Our request for funding creates an unparalleled comprehensive approach to mental Health for pregnant african american women that includes: pregnancy and mental Health support services (pmhss) reaching approximately 300 pregnant african american women through Community capacity-building, 120 will receive trauma-informed doula services, and 100 will receive lactation support services. Other program services include:teen pregnancy: prevent teen pregnancyblack child legacy campaign: reduce deaths of african american childrenblue shild doula: provide doula services to african american pregnant womengirls on the rise: leadership skills training for high school studentscares: support families impacted by covid-19
