Program areas at Camp Encourage

Camp Encourage provided programming focused on social emotional wellness and life skills through: one Spring Day Camp for 31 campers (25 autistic, 6 peers); two signature summer camps (each four-days, three-nights overnight camp experience) for 98 campers (85 autistic, 23 peers); one Fall Overnight Weekend Camp for 44 campers (41 autistic, 3 peers); one Fall Alumni Reunion Day Camp for 12 adults on the autism spectrum; two free camp family social gatherings: 1) a picnic for 75 individuals that included yard games, crafts, canoeing, fishing, and ice cream; and 2) a holiday gathering for 65 individuals; and six community outings for small groups of 5-12 autistic campers (outings included: cooking, board games, swimming, park and picnic fun, painting, and karaoke). Campers were provided $54,238 in scholarships for camp. Unique aspects of the program include: direct social instructions; sensory supports; visual strategies; positive behavioral supports; involvement of graduate and doctoral students; peer models; ropes course and/or zipline; traditional camp activities, such as horseback riding, archery, fishing, swimming, hayrides, art activities, and singing around the campfire; and activities tailored to the individual campers interests.
