Program areas at California Walks
OTS-ST Community Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Training (CPBST) Program: The Community Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Training (CPBST) program was a joint project of UC Berkeley SafeTREC and California Walks. In the 2021-2022 fiscal year, we worked with local neighborhood residents and health, transportation and safety advocates to understand a communitys walking and biking safety concerns and advance their pedestrian and bicycle safety goals. We worked to strengthen collaboration between all safety partners, discuss transportation safety information and local crash data, and collectively develop a community-driven safety action plan. We completed eighteen (18) workshops and follow-up trainings across California and provided support to past CPBST communities.
The California Endowment: In 2021, California Walks hosted frank conversations with actionable dialogue to proactively shape the emerging transportation technology conversation via regional roundtable discussions. A youth-focused roundtable was held in the fall of 2021. California Walks also sat on regional and state committees representing the needs of diverse communities and pedestrians across the state, provided legislative watch summaries for bills related to transportation, and provide Active Transportation Program (ATP) support to communities applying for transportation funds. Cal Walks also engaged youth through the Santa Ana Youth Leadership Program, which fostered youth engagement in local transportation decisions.
SCAG Ambassador Program (RAN FROM MARCH 2022-SEPT 22) The Community Safety Ambassador Training Program was a joint pilot project of California Walks and the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG), along with its Go Human Program. Launched in 2021, the Ambassador Program served Imperial, San Bernardino, and Ventura counties, which were identified by the Project Team as communities of need with reduced capacity to access regional programs and funding cycles. The program completed 6 trainings, 6 workshops, with over 30 hours of content. Forty-eight (48) ambassadors completed 40 activation projects and reached over 6,000 community members.
