Program areas at California ChangeLawyers

California Changelawyers award pipeline grants to organizations that target high school and college-aged students from diverse backgrounds who are interested in pursuing a legal career. In addition, California Changelawyers awards fellowship grants to legal aid agencies to cover the cost of hiring law students and recent grads from diverse backgrounds. By supporting these organizations, the organization replaces the cycle of inequality with a pipeline of young, bright, eager students with diverse perspectives required to create a more just California. In 2022, California Changelawyers distributed $514,443 in grants, supporting diversity pipeline programs and access to justice initiatives across rural California.
The California immigration legal fellowship is a first of its kind program in state history which expands access to counsel in the most underserved rural regions of the state. The legal fellowship is a two-year capacity building and professional development program for recent law graduates to become deportation defense practitioners in the central valley and central coast regions. The current cohort of ten fellows are placed across 7 host organizations, most of which have never provided deportation defense services to their communities. This inaugural cohort started in january 2021, and has significantly increased the number of qualified immigration attorneys defending California residents against family separation.
California Changelawyers awards scholarships to first and third year law students from diverse backgrounds at California law schools. By supporting the brightest change makers of tomorrow as they begin their pursuit of a legal career, we eliminate the roadblocks that exist in achieving success. In 2022, California Changelawyers distributed $424,174 in diversity scholarships and similar aid.
California Changelawyers is committed to creating a pipeline to attorneys. We host: educational forums on career pathways; skills trainings; and conversations addressing barriers to inclusion for first-generation professionals such as imposter syndrome and microaggressions. We also hosted convening with leaders in the legislature and the judiciary to share their inspirational stories.
