Program areas at Bulamu Healtcare International
Bulamu's Clinical Support Team CST program was started in June 2020 in response to the pandemic. Under this program we send 3-5 licensed Ugandan clinicians selected from our Core Team for 8 weeks to the 4 largest health centers in a local government district to upgrade the level of patient care and install long-term health systems. Each CST brings medical equipment patient treatment forms PPE medicines and surgical supplies. They work side-by-side with local staff training them on new skills and modelling a higher productivity culture. In 2022 our five CST teams provided free healthcare to 39,682 patients at health facilities in five districts for a cost of $9.91 per patient.
Bulamu's Health Center Excellence HCE Program is a scalable hospital clinic management system that provides computers to our district partners and collects weekly monthly data on 57 Key Performance Indicators KPIs. The health facilities' KPIs then are graphed as weekly monthly management reports which share timely data and allow district and health facility leaders to monitor performance on a real-time basis set priorities and take corrective action when necessary. The KPIs cover patient care indicators clinical practices staff attendance and clinician productivity. In 2022 the HCE program was installed in three new partner districts bringing the total number of districts covered to 12. As part of the HCE program a partnership with Rotary clubs in the US and Uganda launched a program to bring vital signs equipement and training to selected districts.
Bulamu's Surgery Programs address the backlog of low-income patients who are shut out of their country's existing health systems. Each CST registers patients who need to be evaluated for surgical care. We then send multiple surgery teams to our partner districts for 1 week to provide surgical care free of charge and refer patients to higher-level health facilities as needed. Through our Surgery Intensive SI program Bulamu sends teams of surgeons and support staff with the necessary equipment and supplies to a partner district Health Center IV for one week. These teams provide free surgeries to 250-350 patients who have been left behind by the current health system solely because they lack funds to pay for their care. For patients who need referral for specialist care we cover their transportation and surgery costs under our Angel Program. In 2022 we held six SIs that directly treated 2,023 patients while Bulamu's Angel Program referred 94 patients who required more intensive care. The average cost for these 2,023 patients treated was $136 per patient while the cost of treating the Angel patients was $374.
