Program areas at Boulder Reporting Lab
Expanded our online newsroom and community engagement efforts through the Boulder Reporting Lab website and our flagship newsletter offered for free. This newsletter provides timely news updates, valuable community-generated information and in-depth original Reporting. It seeks to replace the waning Local newspaper habit with an accessible news experience, aiming to deeply and regularly inform residents about important community issues and foster connections among them and their city. By dec. 31, 2023, the organization had over 18,000 newsletter subscribers, achieving substantial market penetration.
In 2023, Boulder Reporting Lab secured additional funding to support innovative projects aimed at establishing a sustainable nonprofit business model. These projects encompassed both revenue-generating and editorial initiatives. They involved implementing advanced technologies to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of our news production process, expanding our Reporting team to cover topics of interest such as the Local food economy and the outdoors and introducing a community-driven election Reporting project. This Initiative gathered input from our readers to develop candidate questionnaires and collaborated with partners to host a non-partisan mayoral debate.
Produced award-winning original journalism that highlighted critical community issues such as climate change, wildfire mitigation, public health, Local policing, homelessness and affordable housing. This work has earned Boulder Reporting Lab approximately 50 journalism awards in Colorado and nationally within two years of publishing, establishing our newsroom as a dedicated and impactful organization committed to enhancing the lives of our community through fact-based information. Investigative public-interest journalism projects have included Reporting on coal pollution in our community and investigation into wrongdoing documented about a county elected official.
