Program areas at NBPC

Media Content Program Development: The Media content program development includes our discretionary funding, AfroPop, Digital content and the PitchBLACK Forum. Black Public Media (BPM) provides production funding to independent producers and acquires completed programs for distribution to various public media outlets (PBS, American Public Television, WGBH/World), and produces its own award-winning public television series AfroPop: The Ultimate Cultural Exchange. Season 14 premiered on WORLD Channel in April 4, 2022. BPM also provided R&D and completion funding for over 10 new documentary, non-fiction and short media programs.
BPM Plus Emerging Media Initiative:Talent Development: BPM provides talent development through several programs including: BPMPlus offers professional development workshops and training for content creators interested in producing Virtual Reality & Augmented Reality media projects; 360 Incubator+ is a 6-8 week mentoring program for independent documentary producers; and Black Media Story Summit seeks to connect talented creatives with local and/national industry stakeholders to discuss and explore new models of production and distribution that can support the ongoing creation and dissemination of Black documentary, nonfiction and short media content.. Outreach & Engagement Through its outreach and engagement initiatives, BPM expands the reach of public media to ensure unserved and underserved communities have access to smart, innovative, and groundbreaking stories exploring the diversity of the African American and African Diaspora experience. BPM partners with public media stations, cultural institutions, and community organizations to screen and promote select content from the AfroPop series and BPM funded programs.
