Program areas at Food Security Hawaii

Ohana gardens is a county-wide backyard garden initiative to provide materials, and support needed to help households grow an increasing amount of Food for their households and neighbors, as a key strategy for long-term Food Security, saving money, and learning new skills. In the year 2022 we set up around 30 gardens and several classes which were attended by up to 25 people. We also have a booklet about Food growth on the islands.
The organization implemented a program with maui family farmer training network to foster solidarity among family farmers and gardeners through engaging in integrative education, inclusive hands-on farm help days, and connection to others in our community committed to regenerative agricultural abundance. The program benefited 60 people in 2022.
Nui lani farm kilauea disaster recovery is a project that will help to restore a thriving farm (nui lani farm) with grading, fencing, greenhouse restoration, road access, and crop restoration. The sponsoring non-profit organization is Food Security Hawaii. The grantor (county of Hawaii) reimburses the sponsoring organization for expenses incurred up to the allocated grant of $350k.
