Program areas at Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia
Policy: bcgp played a key role in convincing the city of Philadelphia to extend its mlk weekend closures to all year round, rather than seasonal. 10 additional miles of protected bike lanes, including the american street and central Delaware river trail. These lanes were added because of our advocacy over the years. 11 new circuit trails projects were opened; many of which due to the advocacy of bcgp including the scudder falls bridge, Delaware river heritage trail, cross county trail, tookany-tacony-frankford trail, liberty bell trail, schuylkill river trail and chester creek trail. We mobilized supporters for a safe Washington avenue and advocated for a state bill that would have allowed parking protected bike lanes. We held our 9th vision conference at temple university. We helped families for safe streets win funding for crash reconstruction technology for the Philadelphia police department.
Better bike share partnership: the better bike share partnership created a learn to ride video in english and spanish, taught virtual urban riding basics classes, and started an online meetup series called changing gears where folks could learn and share about current topics related to personal wellness, cycling in philly and covid-19.
Bicycle Coalition youth cycling: we were able to offer in person programming for the first time since winter 2020. Over 100 youth athletes participated in the 2021 seasons during team practices and weekend events. We awarded $30,000 in 4-year scholarships to three high school seniors.
Adult & children bike education: we launched velolingo, a new program providing Bicycle safety education in the region's six critical languages: spanish, mandarin, vietnamese, russian, haitian creole, and english. We also expanded our Bicycle education classes and offerings in spanish. Through our free better bike share partnership beginner group classes, we taught 154 people how to ride a Bicycle. We kicked off our bike hub at bartram's garden offering free learn to ride classes and free bike rentals. We opened the lil' safety village in hunting park, the region's first traffic park where kids and adults can practice riding bikes in a colorful, car-free space.
