Program areas at Auschwitz Institute for the Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocities

Executive Office Program: At the Auschwitz Institute, the Executive Office serves as the central hub for programmatic development, oversight, and general organizational operations for the entire organization. It provides support and supervision to AIPG's other thematic and regional programs, as well as develops its own programming, particularly in regions not covered by existing programs. This includes, for example, training and technical assistance on atrocity prevention and migration issues in Southeast Asia, war crimes prevention, training and support for the documentation of atrocity crimes in Ukraine, as well as producing relevant and applicable research for prevention.
Mediterranean Basin Program (MBP): Through its Mediterranean Basin Program (MBP), the Auschwitz Institute for the Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocities (AIPG) provides education, specialized training, and technical assistance to policymakers, civil society leaders, and academic experts throughout Southeastern Europe. Coordinated from Bucharest, Romania, AIPGs activities in this region are carefully designed to equip participants with the necessary knowledge, tools, and networking capacities to develop and implement effective strategies and policies for preventing identity-based violence. The Global Raphael Lemkin Seminar for Genocide Prevention, which is organized by AIPGs MBP is one of the organizations main pillars of work. The seminar is organized in partnership with the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum and the UNs joint office of special advisers on genocide prevention and the responsibility to protect. Each week-long program brings together twenty to twenty-five government officials from at least fifteen states ranging from at-risk, in-crisis, and post-conflict states, to donor countries and those currently inactive in the international human rights arena. The seminar welcomes participants who have professional responsibilities in relevant areas, including atrocity prevention, human rights, and international criminal justice, among others. Through the power of place, we provide our participants with the opportunity to make a personal investment and commitment to the field of genocide prevention. AIPG has learned from previous experience that only when there is this emotional connection does the motivation to act stay with our participants when they return home.
Research and Development Online Education Program (RDOE): The online Education Program offers virtual atrocity prevention training to government officials and civil society stakeholders around the world. RDOE offers courses in English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Romanian, German, BosnianCroatianMontenegrinSerbian (BCMS), and Thai in thirteen different thematic areas. These trainings also provide the opportunity for alumni of other AIPG programs to expand their capacities for prevention with online modules that specifically reflect the realities of these regions. As of December 2022, the Online Education Program has more than 2300 alumni from 59 countries around the world. In addition to this global programming, the RDOE also leads the Redefining Policing to Affirm and Instill Human Rights (REPAIR) project which strengthens the capacity of local police officers across the United States to protect and promote civil and human rights. This project is organized in cooperation with the National Center for Civil and Human Rights of Atlanta.
