Program areas at Children's Literacy Project
Programs for Adults: In an effort to make the training more accessible to a wider variety of volunteers, the project continues to use a five-day training program requiring the tutors to complete pre-class and post-class work. This program relies more heavily on coaching during and after training. Volunteers were trained using Augustine Literacy Project's research-based methodology to help disadvantaged children attending NC public schools improve literacy skills. 50 tutors were trained, benefitting at least 100 people. Tutor one child -- change two lives.
Tutor support: The Training Program Coordinator schedules several opportunities for tutors to gather and discuss tutoring. These meetings are usually focused on a particular area of tutor training. The Training Program Coordinator considers the needs and requests of the tutors as she schedules these meetings. These gatherings also provide the tutors with opportunities to mutually support each other, especially by sharing stories of success. These gatherings continued on Zoom on an irregular basis during the pandemic. Many people benefited from this opportunity.
High-school Tutor Training Program: During the academic day and year, 27 seniors at Durham Academy, Durham, NC, and Trinity School of Durham and Chapel Hill, NC were trained as Augustine tutors. The students served as tutors for struggling, elementary-school children for most of the academic year. The training for students contains the same instruction as the adult training. It is simply taught in smaller segments over more time. At least 54 people benefitted from this training.
