The ADFM Annual Meeting content is focused on the needs of their members in performing their jobs as chairs of academic departments of family medicine, provision of Listserv for sharing ideas among members, study of critical issues facing departments around medical students and resident teaching, clinical service delivery and research, development of a website with enhanced resources and a database tied to individual member departments. The conference hosts close to 200 department chairs and their administrators annually.
The ADFM LEADS Fellowship Program provides interactive training, tools, and experiential learning for those aspiring to senior leadership positions in academic or other health systems. The program has an emphasis on strategic career planning and features a cohort-responsive curriculum structured around the Leadership Competencies for Family Medicine Department Chairs and Senior Leaders, which we have found fit for other leadership roles as well.
The FM Next Grant Research Summit was a collaborative effort within the discipline of family medicine, led by ADFM, to bring together those invested in research in family medicine to strategize for what the future of family medicine research should look like. It included a year-long strategic planning process, culminating in a summit that brought together over 140 leaders in the discipline to explore possible action steps to move the strategic plan forward.
Board, committees, task forces, advocacy issues, support for the medical journal Annals of Family Medicine, and fellowships are key to carrying out the mission and vision of ADFMs programs and initiatives including critical decisions and support for advocacy family medicine issues, and the support of educational research in Annals.
