Live arts & galler: we provide an unjuried, uncensored, all ages forum for the arts; every artist residing in rhode island has the opportunity to exhibit or perform their original work in our venues. As220 presents an extraordinary range of activities and our unjuried and uncensored booking policy ensures that a limitless variety appears on our stages and on our walls. Live arts venues include the main stage, the black box theatre, psychic readings and the dance studio, and these venues host live music, theatre, dance, performance art, figure drawing, poetry slams, film screenings, late night programming, fashion shows, workshops, festivals and more. In fiscal year 2020, live arts presented 363 performances with 4,200 artists and attendance of (continued on schedule o)over 15,000, in addition to 447 classes or workshops in live arts, with attendance of 3,674.the As220 galleries include the main gallery, the project space, the reading room, the resident gallery, the aborn gallery and the window gallery and feature visual artists in various mediums on a monthly rotating schedule. In fiscal year 2020, the galleries curated 70 exhibitions featuring 129 visual artists (including 79 first-time exhibitors) with attendance of approximately 2,667. In october 2019, the As220 galleries collaborated with world-renowned artist shepard fairey on a large-scale mural installation and "facing the giant", an exhibition to celebrate 30 years of his work.the above program accomplishments were impacted by covid-19, which required all venues and galleries to close beginning in march 2020, resulting in over 200 cancelled events and exhibits.
Live/work: As220 owns and manages three mixed-use buildings in downtown providence, rhode island, totaling approximately 100,000 sq ft. we offer affordable housing and studio space for over 60 artists on the upper floors of each of our three downtown buildings, including 47 live/work studios and 8 work-only studios. Each of our buildings includes a mix of affordable residences, artist studios and public As220 programming. We also provide offices for two other non-profit organizations and have 6 commercial tenants, all of which are local, one-of-a-kind businesses. Permanent, affordable artist housing has been key to transforming downtown providence into a vibrant place to live and work over the past 25 years. Our tenants are also part of the core foundation of the As220 community, (continued on schedule o)have access to As220 resources, and help support the community through volunteer work.as220 is proud to have supported residents during the covid-19 pandemic regardless of financial circumstances and ability to continue to pay rent.
As220 youth works with young people aged 14-21 through 5 crews: apparel, digital media, music, performing arts and visuals. As220 youth operates out of 3 primary locations: the downtown youth studio in our empire street complex; nowell leadership academy; and the rhode island training school, the state's juvenile detention center, where we have been working for over 20 years. This exposure to the arts taps into an often-overlooked creative potential, offering a powerful alternative for young people. In fy2020, As220 youth ran 1,118 classes and served 738 young people, including 299 youth members. Zukrewe, the As220 youth performance group, performed publicly 20 times throughout the region with attendance of nearly 400. Futureworlds 5: escape from jollyworld, As220 youth's culminating project, a (continued on schedule o)collaborative multi-media hip hop theater production, debuted in august 2019 with encore performances in october 2019. In march 2020, As220 youth transitioned to virtual learning and continued to serve 150 youth throughout the covid-19 pandemic.
As220 industries a cross-disciplinary arts education space and community studio, comprised of a media arts lab, fabrication lab, printshop and community darkroom. In addition to providing members access to professional tools and equipment for artistic production, As220 industries has offered educational workshops from beginner to advanced levels since 2011. By providing affordable access to studio space, tools of the trade, and varied training opportunities, As220 industries has fostered a dynamic environment for learning and making, as well as small business development and production. In fiscal year 2020, 71 certifications, classes and workshops were offered to the community with attendance of 245. There were 286 active members of the industries and 12 small businesses operated out of the industries spaces.the industries closed to the public in april 2020 due to covid-19. The program then operated in a limited capacity to support emergency public health needs such as producing 300 face shields for healthcare workers and 500 handmade facemasks for the community, and proto-typing ventilator adaptors. The program also hsoted print-making initiatives that elevated healthcare workers, essential workers, and the black lives matter movement.
Practice//practice and other programs: practice//practice is As220's professional development program for arts administrators. For 35 years, As220 has been a living example of innovation in non-profit arts programming, youth programming, community development and creative placemaking, and has grown from a small grassroots collective into a large-scale organization that serves as an international model. Practice//practice uses workshops, presentations and tours to share the As220 policies, practices, values, and more. The focus of practice//practice is a bi-annual 4-day residency program attended by local, national and international artists/managers. Due to covid-19, the spring 2020 session was cancelled. The fall 2019 program invited past attendees back for an alumni summit.other programs include organization-wide programming such as As220's racial justice initiative, participation in the city of providence's annual pvd fest and supporting and incubating small and fledgling arts groups as they grow into their own non-profits.
