Program areas at Artists Working in Education
Artists in residence (air) programs paired professional Artists with youth and community groups to work collaboratively on inclusive and collaborative public art projects at community sites. College and high school interns were also engaged. Programming was done in creative virtual and hybrid ways that offered new strategies for community engagement. Projects align youth driven planning with brader community goals. Projects may create neighborhood infrastructure, contribute to neighborhood beautification, or tell a story about a pertinent community issue. The air program hired professional and emerging Artists.
Rising Artists council (rac) of the Artists in residence program engageg high school aged youth interested in pursuing creative careers in a cooperative cohort that builds their leadership and technical skills as Artists. The council learns from professional Artists, visits galleries and public artworks, and strengthens artistic techniques througout the year.
The truck studio transitioned to virtual programming that provided access to the visual arts activities showcasing new techniques and opportunities online, utilizing both live visits and recorded formats, with many videos in spanish as well as in english. Artists also distributed free art kits to provide a creative array of art making materials to city youth to use at home while social distancing. These opportunities allowed awe to continue to cultivate community and inspire imaginations even under pandemic restrictions. The truck studio maintained a team of teaching Artists.
