American Sports Medicine Institute, Inc. (ASMI) is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit sports medicine research and education foundation located at St. Vincent's Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. ASMI was founded in 1987 by renowned orthopaedic surgeon Dr. James R. Andrews. The mission of ASMI is to improve the understanding, prevention and treatment of sports-related injuries through research and education. American Sports Medicine Institute, Inc. features a state-of-the-art biomechanics laboratory, a sports medicine library, and a skills lab for arthroscopic training and cadaveric research. ASMI is the nation's largest accredited educator of sports medicine physicians with graduates located in forty-four states, Puerto Rico, and ten foreign countries. IN JULY, 2021, 10 ORTHOPAEDIC SURGEONS AND PRIMARY CARE SPORTS MEDICINE PHYSICIANS AS WELL AS 1 ATHLETIC TRAINER GRADUATED FROM ASMI'S SPORTS MEDICINE FELLOWSHIPS BRINGING OUR TOTAL NUMBER OF GRADUATES TO 459. ASMI CONTINUES TO BE THE LARGEST TRAINER OF SPORTS MEDICINE PHYSICIANS IN THE US. IN JANUARY 2022, ASMI CONDUCTED OUR 40th ANNUAL INJURIES IN BASEBALL COURSE. THIS COURSE IS THE LONGEST RUNNING COURSE OF ITS KIND. BETWEEN JULY 2021 - JUNE 2022, ASMI CONTINUED TO DEVELOP AND SPONSOR OTHER EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS, CONDUCT SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH AND CONTINUE OTHER CHARITABLE ACTIVITIES. 30 RESEARCH STUDIES WERE PUBLISHED IN THE PROFESSIONAL LITERATURE DURING THIS TIME PERIOD. ANNUALLY ON AVERAGE MORE THAN 15,000 PRE-PARTICIPATION SPORTS PHYSICALS ARE CONDUCTED FOR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN THE COMMUNITY BY ASMI STAFF, FELLOWS, AND ATTENDING EACH YEAR. As part of the Ascension Catholic health ministry, the filing organization served in support of Ascension's commitment to both care for patients and communities and support caregivers and other associates through the challenges of the COVID-19 global pandemic in FY22.
