Program areas at ASPB

Publications: oxford university press (oup) produce and disseminate two of Aspb's journals - Plant physiology and the Plant cell. A third journal, Plant direct, is published in partnership with the Society for experimental biology and wiley. Plant physiology primarily publishes full-length papers containing new results in Plant physiology, biochemistry, cellular and molecular biology, biophysics, synthetic and systems biology, and environmental biology of plants and associated organisms. The Plant cell publishes cutting-edge research papers in cellular, molecular, and developmental biology of plants. Plant direct covers all of these areas; it is a sound science, open access journal. In 2022 Plant physiology published four focus issues, and the Plant cell published three. Aspb also publishes a bi-monthly print and online newsletter (Aspb news) and a weekly email newsletter (the signal) that include general Society news items, profiles of prominent Plant scientists, and other information of value to the community it serves. Aspb has also self- and co-published a number of text books related to various aspects of Plant biology.
Awards and fellowship: the Society provides several awards and fellowships each year for various endeavors related to the science and study of Plant biology.
Annual meeting: the annual Plant biology conference provides a forum for the presentation of scientific data, education, the exchange of information, professional development, and networking among Plant scientists from around the world. Plant biology 2022 was the Society's first in-person conference since 2019; it was convened in portland, or, and it incorporated Aspb's first "Plant science saturday" public outreach event.
Other programs: the following provides descriptions of the Society's other programs:science policy: the Society maintains active engagement with congress and the executive branch in order to inform government about its members' priorities and to keep its members apprised of government actions, policies, and budgets.education and outreach: Aspb education and outreach activities are funded by an annual board-authorized allocation from the Society's long-term investment portfolio. Among these activities, Plant bloome provides grants in support of educational projects that are aimed at enhancing public awareness and understanding of the essential roles of plants in all areas of life.meetings and event business: Aspb ceased offering administation and management services support to our community during 2022. We have one remaining client and the relationship with them is being phased out.
Member services: the Society serves approximately 3,000 members, 40% of whom are international. Key membership benefits include electronic access to the Society's journals, newsletter, and membership directory; discounts on publications and reduced registration fees for meetings
Root & shoot research coordination network: this award to Aspb from the us national science foundation supports the establishment of a network of Plant science and partner organizations aimed at seeding and cultivating cultural change at the organizational level. The primary goal of the grant is to push Plant science organizations toward becoming truly equitable, inclusive, and anti-racist (root) and, by doing so, providing evidence, advice, and guidance so that others can learn from our experiences and example (shoot). During 2022 a year-long training program was established for the leaders of all seven participating Plant science societies; a travel award was established for student-mentor pairs affiliated with sacnas or manrrs to attend one of the Plant science conferences organized by the research coordination network participating societies; and a working group was formed that created a plant-society-wide inclusive conference guide.
