Government affairs: American Hotel and Lodging Association (ah&la)'s national advocacy agenda and work is focused on targeted policy areas: protecting our guests and improving the guest experience, reining in illegal hotels, supporting the industry's workforce, and promoting travel and tourism.

Committees and contributions: American Hotel and Lodging Association (ah&la) continues to evaluate our committee structure to ensure that we are facilitating an environment where peer groups can gather to explore the pressing issues in the hospitality industry. Currently our committees include: resort, sustainability, and industry advocacy. Ahla has six councils that provide members with opportunities for networking and information and idea sharing with colleagues from their specific industry segments. These are the brands council (comprised of Hotel companies that own and/or market brands, including those that grant franchises for Hotel brands); owners council (comprised of Hotel companies that own hotels); management companies council (comprised of Hotel companies that operate or manage hotels); independent hotels council (comprised of hotels that are not branded); psa council (comprised of the partner state associations); and allied council (comprised of companies who do business with the Lodging industry). Industry relations: helping students achieve the American dream and finance their future, the Association continues to make significant contributions to students around the country. The development of youth and the next generation of Hotel employees is central to the Association. In 2018, ahlef awarded academic scholarships to 795 promising hospitality management students attending colleges and universities across the country. Additionally, 10 Hotel employees received professional development scholarships for certification and distance learning. Ten scholarship recipients were selected to attend the 2018 Lodging conference to network with industry leaders and learn about important industry issues. These scholarships help provide much needed resources to students who seek a life-long career in the hospitality industry.
