Program areas at American Civil Liberties Union Foundation of Rhode Island
Provided legal representation and participated in over 30 lawsuits and administrative actions on a wide range of issues, including a successful suit challenging a city's ban on the posting of political signs on residential property; successful representation of a small church denied a zoning permit to hold services at the pastor's home; a lawsuit on behalf of an employee at professional cleaning service who was terminated after she got pregnant; and a lawsuit seeking remedies for thousands of current and former state employees whose personal health care information was breached.
Organized and participated in a variety of events during the year to make people aware of their rights and stimulate public discussion on civil liberties issues, including: an annual meeting discussion with attorneys and clients involved in major ACLU cases; a review of enacted state laws in 2021 affecting civil liberties; and a preview of important civil liberties cases in the 2022-2023 U.S. Supreme Court term.
Prepared, publicized and disseminated an array of "know your rights" materials on a variety of civil liberties issues, including thousands of flyers and pamphlets advising people of their voting rights, and issued a widely-publicized report analysing school suspensions and their discriminatory impact on students of color and students with disabilities.
