Analyze compensation of key personnel

Benchmark and export compensation figures in bulk and view salary information for specific individuals

Cause IQ mines compensation information from the Form 990 and Schedule J. This data is available for Cause IQ customers to benchmark, export, and view. This compensation information helps you advise your clients on what to pay new executives and Cause IQ's purpose-built tools generate reports that help justify the proposed compensation figures. Cause IQ customers use:

  • The "Benchmark" tool to generate custom reports that compare salary data points of similar personnel working at peer organizations;
  • The "Export" tool to generate bulk reports containing organization and personnel records with compensation information; and
  • Cause IQ's organization and personnel profile pages to view compensation details for specific individuals.

Generate compensation analysis reports with the "Benchmark" tool

Cause IQ customers use the "Benchmark" tool to compare compensation values of personnel with similar positions from up to 250 organizations. This tool generates compensation analysis reports that show salary averages, medians, growth rates, and specific data points for personnel in a benchmark group. These reports help Cause IQ customers quickly identify compensation trends amongst peer organizations. Additionally, Cause IQ's compensation analysis reports provide insights that help justify how much a client pays a new executive or how much of a raise a client gives to a current employee. Cause IQ's compensation analysis reports are available to download to Excel so you can share your findings with clients and further analyze the data with your colleagues. Here are the general steps:

  • Step 1

    Choose the peer organizations you want to benchmark personnel for

    If you want to compare compensation values of personnel with similar positions at organizations meeting specific criteria, create a new search and add appropriate filters to segment the relevant organizations.

    If you want to compare the compensation of similar personnel at specific peer organizations, search for the organizations and add them to a list or create a list with the CSV upload tool. Please note that the CSV upload tool is part of Cause IQ's Data Enrichment Add-on.

    To use Cause IQ's "Benchmark" tool, your search segment or list must contain 250 or fewer organizations.

  • Step 2

    Access the "Benchmark" tool

    From the search interface, click on the "Benchmark" tab.

    If you're comparing compensation values for personnel from a list of organizations:

    1. Go to the "Lists" section on the left of your Dashboard
    2. Choose "Manual" or "Uploaded from CSV" as relevant
    3. Select the appropriate list's name
    4. Click "Benchmark organizations and personnel"

  • Step 3

    Choose your benchmark type

    Since you're looking to generate a compensation analysis report, select "Compensation of key personnel" under "Type of benchmark" in the "Benchmark Type" step.

  • Step 4

    Choose the personnel and compensation fields you want to benchmark

    In the "Fields & Analysis" step, choose the types of personnel you want to include in your compensation analysis by their position levels and functions. You want to choose levels and functions that correspond with the position(s) your client is looking to fill or give a raise to. For example, if your client is looking to hire a new CEO, you want to make sure to choose the level "Chief" and the function "Executive". 

    This is also where you choose the Form 990 and Schedule J compensation fields you want to include in your report (e.g., Total compensation, Base compensation from organization).

    If you don't want to include the names of the personnel or organizations in your report, select "Anonymize peer personnel" in the "Analysis options" section.

  • Step 5

    Generate and view your compensation analysis report

    In the "Fields & Analysis" step, select "Next: Generate report" and Cause IQ displays your benchmark report once it's done processing.

    Your compensation analysis report provides the location of the selected compensation fields (from the Form 990 or Schedule J), the number of personnel with the field filled out, the most recent averages, the most recent medians, and the number of data points from each year. The report includes graphs that show changes over time for the compensation values and the corresponding growth rate ranges by year. The bottom of the report includes a table with the names of the benchmarked personnel, their job title(s), the organizations they work for, and the most recent values for the selected compensation fields.

    You can remove a specific individual from your compensation analysis report by selecting the "x" next to the name of the organization they work for.

  • Step 6

    Download your report to Excel

    Click "Download to Excel" at the top-right of the report. Cause IQ packages the benchmarked compensation into one file. The file includes an "Overview" worksheet that summarizes the organizations and compensation fields included in your report. The file also includes a "Personnel" worksheet, where you can find:

    • Names of the benchmarked personnel
    • Their job title(s)
    • The organization they work for and the organization's EIN
    • Corresponding Form 990 year
    • Most recent selected compensation data points

Export compensation fields in bulk

The compensation fields from the main Form 990 and Schedule J that are in Cause IQ are available to export when generating bulk reports of organization and personnel records. Cause IQ customers include compensation fields in their exports so they can understand what relevant organizations pay personnel in specific positions. This data helps you help your clients know what to pay a new executive, or how much of a raise your clients should give to an existing employee. Here are the general steps:

  • Step 1

    Choose the organizations you want to export personnel on

    Either create a new search to segment organizations meeting specific criteria, or create a list of specific organizations (by searching for organizations and manually adding them to a list or with the CSV upload tool).

  • Step 2

    Access the "Export" tool

    Click on the "Export" tab from the search interface.

    If you're exporting personnel records from a list of specific organizations:

    1. Go to the "Lists" section on the left of your Dashboard
    2. Select "Manual" or "Uploaded from CSV" as appropriate
    3. Choose the appropriate list's name
    4. Click "Export bulk report"

    Cause IQ opens the "Export" tool in the search interface with the selected list as the only filter.

  • Step 3

    Choose your export type

    In the "What" step of the export process, you want to choose "Personnel, with organization details" under the "What to export" section.

    If you want to export the records to a CSV file, choose "CSV spreadsheet file" under the "CSV or Salesforce" section. If you want to export the records directly to Salesforce to create new Accounts and Contacts (or Leads), select "Salesforce".

  • Step 4

    Select your personnel settings

    In the "Personnel" step of the export process:

    • Choose the appropriate position levels and functions for the type of personnel you want to export compensation values for -- you want to choose levels and functions that correspond with the position(s) your client is looking fill or give a raise to
    • Set the maximum number of contacts you want Cause IQ to export from a given organization (Cause IQ exports the highest ranking personnel first)
    • Choose to "Preview" your matching personnel to see how many personnel match your settings and what the first few employees look like

  • Step 5

    Choose the organization and personnel details you want to include in your export

    In the "Columns" step of the export process, choose the organization information you want to include in your export.

    The "Personnel detail columns" section of the "Columns" step is where you choose the compensation values you want to export. Click "Change columns" on the right, select "Categories", and choose the "Compensation information" option to view the available compensation fields. Compensation fields from the main Form 990 (e.g., Compensation from organization) and Schedule J (e.g., Total comp, org and related orgs) are available for export. Select the appropriate field(s) and click "Add column".

  • Step 6

    Generate your report

    After you review your export details in the "Confirm" step, select "Create Spreadsheet" or "Start Salesforce export" as appropriate.

    If you chose to export to a CSV file, you can download your file from the blue pop-up notification, your Dashboard, or the email Cause IQ sends with the file attached. 

    If you chose to export directly to Salesforce, Cause IQ provides a CSV file that summarizes your export. You can access the file from the blue pop-up notification, your Dashboard, or the email Cause IQ sends with the file attached.

View compensation information for specific individuals

Cause IQ makes compensation information readily available to view in two spots on the website. Cause IQ's organization profile pages and personnel profile pages. Cause IQ customers access these profiles to quickly understand what relevant organizations pay specific key employees. Gaining these insights help you advise your clients on how much they should pay new executives and/or how much of a raise your client should give existing employees.

You can access an organization's profile by searching for the organization in the search interface and clicking on their name in the "List" view. Once you're in the organization's profile, click on the "Personnel" tab, so you can view available compensation values. The "Personnel" tab includes an employees':

  • Name
  • Job title(s)
  • Email address (if available)
  • Direct phone number (if available)
  • Form 990 compensation information (if available)
  • LinkedIn profile link (if available)

To view an individuals compensation information, click on the "Form 990 compensation information" link. Here's a look at the "Personnel" tab on an organization's profile and where you can view compensation information for a specific employee:

All identified personnel in Cause IQ have a unique profile, and if compensation information is available for the individual, their salary details are available for you to view. You can access an individuals profile by clicking on their name in the "Personnel" tab of the corresponding organization's profile. Also, you can use Cause IQ's people search to find individuals by name, title, or keywords and then select their name from a list to access their profile.

If available, Cause IQ provides Form 990 and Schedule J compensation information on the left of an individual's profile. The compensation section includes details on the individual's base salary and other forms of compensation including bonuses.
