Program areas at VHW
Clinical program - our cornerstone program in kigutu is a comprehensive community Health clinic. The services we provide include primary care, maternal and child Health, mental Health, the prevention and treatment of hiv, tb, malaria and other infectious diseases, and a growing non-communicable disease program. Our clinic has responded to local needs over time and now includes four inpatient wards, including one dedicated primarily to severe pediatric malnutrition. We are expanding our services by building and operating a hospital.
Education - through our education program, we strengthen young people's access to pre-primary and primary education, develop teachers' skills through a training program in coordination with area schools, and empower parents to take an active role in their children's education and academic success. We are expanding our services by building and operating a boarding school.
Agriculture - in response to community needs, our agriculture program has evolved from nutrition education and seed distribution to include community outreach events, training, livestock management, and environmental protection. Community members manage on-site gardens and livestock shelters, grow community gardens, and take part in agricultural and livestock cooperatives.
Economic development - Village Health Works provides training for vulnerable community members-in particular women who have experienced gender-based violence. Through cooperatives that provide community members with a source of income and economic empowerment, while offering a safe space for camaraderie and friendship.
