Vicki Welsh Ovarian Cancer Fund

The Vicki Welsh Ovarian Cancer Fund was incorporated as a separate nonprofit organization in 2013 to continue the mission begun in 2006, in memory of Vicki Welsh, to promote awareness of ovarian cancer, educate on recognition of the warning signs, supporting research, and supporting women diagnosed with the disease. The Fund has provided educational information, new diagnostic equipment, hired community health educators, posted on digital billboards around the greater Kansas City area, recorded public service announcements, and attended multiple community events annually to increase awareness about ovarian cancer and its symptoms. The 12th Annual Whisper Walk, held in September, has grown with over 2,000 participants in 2016. Ten billboards, 40 Public Service Announcements, and Her Life magazine ads provided ovarian cancer symptom awareness. The first Taste for Teal Wine Event was held in November to further promote ovarian cancer awareness and support women with ovarian cancer. A Health Educator was engaged to implement and manage community awareness and professional education programs.

The 8th Annual Teal Tea was held in May and is the signature annual event and fundraiser presented by Carolyn's Pennies. This event brings together ovarian cancer survivors, their families and friends, while raising funds for the fight against ovarian cancer. While this event promotes the mission and programming of the organization, it is a significant fundraising event, and the organization is reporting the financial details of the Teal Tea Event on Schedule G of the Form 990. Carolyn's Pennies donated $5,000 to the Kansas City CARE Clinic and $10,000 to the University of Kansas Cancer Center.
