Program areas at Switchboard of Miami

The helpline services department is certified by the american association of suicidology and licensed by the Florida department of children and families (dcf). Every year, more than 145,000 people call the helpline for confidential and free telephone counseling, information and referral, and crisis intervention services. The organization's helpline services are provided by more than 75 caring multilingual, professional staff and volunteers who assist callers seeking assistance for basic survival needs, domestic violence issues, suicide prevention services, substance abuse problems and a myriad of other needs. The helpline is available to all residents of miami-dade, collier and monroe counties and services are free of charge. The helpline department also maintains the most comprehensive database of social service and governmental programs available within the county through its community resource directory. Furthermore, the helpline provides professional training and staff development and telephone support services to support not-for-profit, for-profit and governmental agencies.
Crisis support services - the suicide prevention department follows up with callers in crisis who may need extra, ongoing support. Follow up calls are made to ensure clients are following their safety plans, keeping medical appointments and getting their basic needs met. Caller who meet the follow up programs are those who have had a previous attempt, have a plan for suicide and a means to complete or anyone who is in process and active rescue needs to be dispatched. Crisis support and follow up will continue for up to 90 days for any individual.
Switchboard of Miami has been providing education and prevention services to miami-dade children and youth through a variety of instructional programs. Services are provided free of charge, offered in english and spanish, are designed for boys and girls ages 12-18 residing in miami-dade county, and specifically those that have been identified as at-risk of alcohol, tobacco, drug abuse, violence, early pregnancy, and other high-risk behaviors. Program services are school-based in middle and senior high schools throughout miami-dade county. Special presentations and workshops on children and youth issues are made available to community organizations, and the corporate sector. Prevention services are school-based initiatives focused on teaching prevention strategies that empower youth through positive skill building instructional sessions. Emphasis is placed on teaching life skills necessary to prevent alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drug use, teen pregnancy, violence and bullying. Prevention programs serve over 3,700 youths, ages 6-18, every year in several miami-dade county public schools and community after-school programs. Staff conducted programming to over 150 individual groups.
