Scottish Fiddlers of California aims to educate the public in Scottish traditional music and dance, while providing personal growth opportunities for those interested in exploring the genre. They offer two annual music schools, periodic workshops, and disseminate educational materials through sheet music and video recordings. With a focus on instruction, Alasdair Frasers Sierra Fiddle Camp brought together 146 students of all levels with 20 expert instructors. All activities are designed to preserve, perform, and promote Scotland's rich tradition of fiddle music and dance.

Program areas at Scottish Fiddlers of California

Instruction in Scottish music and dance:Alasdair Frasers Sierra Fiddle Camp was held from June 18 through June 26, 2022. Twenty instructor taught fiddle, guitar, piano, song and dance to 146 students with experience ranging from beginning to master level. Valley of the Moon Scottish Fiddle camp (Aug 26-Sept 3, 2022) provided similar classes at all skill levels to 186 participants, taught by 19 instructors from USA, Sweden and Canada. The Peter Connolly and Cali Funds provided $19,425 in financial aid to participants.The San Francisco Scottish Fiddlers held one in-person and 11 zoom meetings averaging 25 attendees. Five of the meetings included music workshops. There were 5 rehearsals for concerts and 7 rehearsals for farmers market performances. The Scottish Fiddlers of Los Angeles held 7 rehearsals for Highland Games and other performances.
Dissemination of educational materials: Alasdair Frasers Sierra Camp and Valley of the Moon provided sheet music to attendees. Both camps also provided video recordings of many of the activities. Artists' recordings and books were available for sale during camp.SFSF: monthly newsletters to 207 members; 3 bound copies of 900 collected traditional and contemporary tunes provided to members (at cost), or available for members to download (for free). Recordings and sheet music for performances provided to membership (free download). Additionally, audio recordings created by members, and other practice aids are available to members online, along with Spring Concerts, recurring events and gigs, and monthly meetings. SFLA maintains an internet account of sound files, practice recordings of tunes and sheet music for their 34 members.
Public performance of Scottish music and dance:The San Francisco Scottish Fiddlers performed at 22 farmers markets to a combined audience estimated at 8,550. The average number of performers at each was 13. SFSF gave three concerts on May 20, 21 and 22 to combined audience of 624, with 50 players at each concert. Fourteen members of SFSF performed at Wilkinson School to an audience of 80. SFSF performed for the Rossmoor Caledonian Club on 3/21 and 5/16 for audiences of 80 and 20, respectively.The Scottish Fiddlers of Los Angeles performed at the ScottishFest, sponsored by the United Scottish Society, on May 28,2022. There were 23 performers and a varied audience size. Sixteen members of SFLA played at the Seaside Highland games in Ventura on October 8, 2022.
