Resources for Independent Living promotes socio-economic independence for persons with disabilities through peer-supported, consumer-directed independent living services and advocacy. The organization was incorporated in 1976 to provide services and support for people with disabilities to become more independent in society. RIL offers advocacy and legislative monitoring, assists with finding accessible and affordable housing, and provides other relevant resources to consumers and their families.

Program areas at Resources for Independent Living

Resources for Independent Living provides the following services: Advocacy and Legislative Monitoring: RIL provides information and support to consumers and their families related to issues in the community. Housing: Assistance in finding accessible and affordable housing. Personal Assistance Services: RIL assists consumers who need homecare services to obtain and maintain appropriate assistance in the home. Information and Referral: Assistance and identification of community options to maintain independence. Peer Counseling: Support and role models for people who want to live more independently. Independent Living Skills Training: RIL offers a nine-part curriculum focused on maintain independence in the community. This is offered in a classroom setting both online and in person. Assistive Technology: Provides assistance to people with disabilities to love and work as independently as possible by identifying their need for assistive technology devices or services and locating resources.In addition to the preceding core services, RIL also provides the following services:Transition Services: Services that facilitate from nursing homes and other institutions to the community, provides assistance to those at risk of entering intuitions, and facilitates transition of youth to postsecondary life, including school-to-work, employment, and community independence.Emergency Preparedness: Provides outreach and disaster planning in case of an emergency or natural disaster. Our goal is to help people with disabilities remain safe even during a disaster.
