Since its inception in 1968, Spanish Theatre Repertory Company, Ltd. (Repertorio espaol), has remained committed to producing an unparalleled repertoire of contemporary and classical plays from spain, latin america, and the hispanic-american community; and instilling a sense of pride of heritage for all latinos in the united states as well as creating opportunities for cultural exchange with all americans. In fy2022, Repertorio Espanol continued to serve latinx communities. Highlights included: highlights of activities from july 2021 to june 2022:- recorded productions available for streaming with english subtitles. Among the works available to audiences included: "courage, betrayal and a woman scorned," a Spanish classic written by ana caro that enriches the canon of spanish-golden age drama with a female perspective; silvia gonzlez's "boxcar," a moving play ripped from the headlines dealing with the tragedy of undocumented immigrants from mexico and central america; carmen rivera's "la gringa," celebrating its 26th anniversary at Repertorio, this is a quintessential american play exploring the conflicts of a second-generation woman with a dual cultural identity; federico garcia lorca's "the house of bernarda alba," his last masterpiece about societal repression on women. In addition to making these works accessible nationwide, Repertorio partnered with local organizations like harlem stage and hostos community college to provide free or discounted access to these plays to their constituencies. - a return to in-person live performances. On october 6, coinciding with hispanic heritage month, Repertorio welcomed back audiences to the Theatre with an electrifying performance of junot diaz's "the brief wondrous life of oscar wao," adapted and directed by marco antonio rodrguez. The reopening attracted board members, patrons, corporate and foundation supporters, and artists and community leaders such as lin-manuel miranda, junot diaz, and john leguizamo. - a new production of the Spanish playwright lope de vega's fun, fast-paced golden age romantic comedy "the lady simpleton," directed by resident director leyma lopez. Leyma's adaptation brought this classic to life to new generations in a way that is relatable to modern audiences. Repertorio offered 15 performances of the play with approximately 2,000 people attending.- the world premiere in june of the theatrical adaptation of isabel allende's novel, "eva luna" by caridad svich. Considered to be the first and most successful female writer in latin america, allende managed to make a life out of her texts, influencing the literary feminist movement in latin america. Estefana fadul, a vassar college graduate and a van lier fellow of Repertorio's young directors program, brought to the stage a visually powerful and beautiful production honoring and celebrating the power of successful storytelling by a woman. - 39 school-day matinee performances for 4,374 students (grades 7 -12) from across the mid-atlantic states. Productions forming part of the school-day performances included julia alvarez's "in the time of the butterflies," junot diaz's "the brief wondrous life of oscar wao," carmen rivera's "la gringa," lope de vega's "the lady simpleton, and federico garcia lorca's "the house of bernarda alba." Performances were accompanied by pre-performance lectures and post-performance question-and-answer periods.- 13 tours to different venues: iona college, new rochelle, ny ("the house of bernarda alba"); scarsdale high school, scarsdale, ny ("the brief wondrous life of oscar wao"); brentwood hs, brentwood, ny (("the brief wondrous life of oscar wao"); hostos community college, the bronx, ny ("the brief wondrous life of oscar wao"); harlem stage, new york, ny ("in the time of the butterflies"); long island city hs, long island city, ny ("la gringa"); amistad dual language school, new york, ny ("la gringa"). - in-school residencies at 9 public schools in nyc including at ps58, ps110, ms 188, ps is 210, ms 319, amistad dual language school, high school for arts and businesses, pan american international hs elmhurst, long island city hs, and newcomers hs. Students learned scene analysis, acting techniques, improvisation, dramatic structure, character development skills as well as how literature and Theatre relate to the world around them. The residencies served 766 latinx students. In all, Repertorio offered 8 productions at its Theatre, representing 155 performances serving 13,071 adults, students, and seniors.
