Rescue, Adoption, Foster, and Pet Feeding Programs: SPCA of Northern Nevada (SPCA-NN) saves and improves the lives of pets and people in northern Nevada (and beyond)! SPCA-NN believes in an open, conversation-based adoption process that carefully matches the lifestyle and expectations of adopters with the personalities and needs of our homeless pets. This approach gives adopted pets and their adopters the greatest chance for a successful, loving life together! We rescue approximately 70% of our homeless pets from rural northern Nevada and rural northern California from our rural partner shelters that are under-resourced and over capacity. We pick them up in our transport van, take them into our adoption center where they receive everything needed to become adoption-ready! (Continued on Sch O)This includes medical intake exams, vaccinations, spay/neuter surgeries, food (including specialty and prescription diets), shelter, behavior assessments, enrichment, and loving care! They'll also receive necessary surgeries and dental vouchers. We successfully treated and adopted 86 kittens and cats through our impactful Ringworm Academy program, which saves cats and kittens at high risk for euthanasia in other facilities. We met many challenges and placed 1,695 homeless pets in loving homes! We had a low return rate of only 6%, which means we're making successful, loving matches. Additionally, our Live Release Rate was a consistently high 97%. We spayed/neutered 1,104 SPCA-NN pets before adopting them into our communities. We placed 575 pets into foster care to become ready for adoption. We supported our adopters and all pet parents with our Pet Help Line to help keep pets in their loving homes instead of being surrendered to shelters. We received 7,068 calls in 2022! Our support also includes discounted or free training and professional animal behavior consultations based on individual need and circumstances. We provided dog and cat food, treats, cat litter, leashes, collars, beds, and more to over 40 other rescue organizations through our Shelter Feeding Program!
Thrift Store:The SPCA-NN thrift store receives gently used and new donations of clothing, shoes, pet goods, furniture, artwork, accessories, and household goods that are inventoried, organized, and sold to the public. All thrift store proceeds support our adoption center programs (see Program A above), and our Affordable Community Veterinary Care programs (see Program B above). Due to the extreme amount of clothing donations, we also partner with social services organizations to provide clothing to their clients to help support these vulnerable human populations dress for job interviews and transition back into society after incarceration, homelessness, domestic violence, addiction recovery, etc. (Continued on Schedule O)Our Thrift Store also includes an on-site kitty lounge to showcase our adoptable cats. In 2022, 32 cats were adopted into loving homes!
Affordable Community Veterinarian Care Programs:In 2022, SPCA-NN fixed 2,701 owned pets through our community SNYPs (Spay/Neuter Your Pets) program! Our affordable spay/neuter clinic for dogs and cats is available to northern Nevada residents with a total household income of $60,000 or less. There are many reasons why you should spay/neuter your pet: a) To help mitigate the high national rate of companion animal euthanasia; b) To prevent unwanted pregnancies and litters; c) To help your pet live a longer, healthier life.(Continued on Schedule O)The Todd's Medical Fund program assisted the owners of 445 pets in paying their veterinarian medical bills, so pets get the vital care they need and deserve!SPCA-NN served 10,660 owned pets through our affordable vaccination / microchip program!SPCA-NN provided 13 dental vouchers to adopters of pets with dental disease grade 4 or worse. SPCA-NN pays private vet clinic partner(s) for the dental post-adoption. This way the pets can recover in their new homes instead of waiting at the adoption center for dentals before being available for adoption. Additionally, SPCA-NN conducted 43 specialty surgeries in house, including amputations, eye enucleations, mass removals, joint repair, and other critical surgeries.
Community Volunteer Program:SPCA-NN offers many opportunities for individuals and organizations to give back to the community through charitable service. Our volunteer outreach program works to offer seniors, students, people with disabilities, and court-ordered community service options to share their time helping and improving the lives of pets in need. In 2022, volunteers spent 24,915 hours assisting animal care staff with daily chores including dishes, laundry, sweeping, mopping, pooper scooping, in-kennel enrichment, dog walking, cat socializing, and processing donations at our thrift store. We had 337 "Active" volunteers, which we define as those who volunteered more than once during the calendar year.
