Program areas at Mvskoke Food Sovereignty Initiative

Mfsi was awarded a sub-contract wtih the kerr center for sustainable agriculture to provide training for beginning farmers and ranchers in Oklahoma through training, mentors, and resources. This program helps beginning farmers and ranchers in Oklahoma develop enterprises so they can be good stewards of their land, operate financially viable farms and help produce local Food for underserved communities. This program enhances the skills of beginning farmers and ranchers who are already mentoring other beginners and helps to develop them into teachers. There is also a youth element that allows mfsi to teach youth about agriculture through school programs and summer programs. The youth are taught about basis growing skills thru hands on projects as well as field trips that teach youth how to identify plants in nature and how they can be beneficial in Food supplies.
The Mvskoke Food and fitness policy project combines community organizing with participatory action research. In collaboration with the muscogee (creek) nation Food and fitness policy council. Mfsi staff developes a logic model to plot a policy development strategy focusing on the issues of childhood obesity and diabetes. Mfsi also develops educational meaterials to support the policy development and to raise awareness about Food and fitness issues, problems and practical culturally appropriate solutions. The muscogee (creek) nation passed legislation in 2012 putting into law a Food policy for the muscogee (creek) nation based on proposal presented by the Food and fitness policy council. Mfsi continues to work with the policy council as they look for more opportunities to improve a healthier lifestyle for the muscogee (creek) citizens. The council with the assistance of mfsi are researching changes in Food policy that are being considered by the inter tribal cncl.
