Program areas at Motheread
DIRECT INSTRUCTION: For Adults: Literacy development classes are provided throughout Wake County in partnerships with the North Carolina Community College System Office, the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, the Wake County Department of Human Services and SAFEchild, Inc. In community and correctional settings, students attend Motheread/Fatheread literacy classes to improve overall literacy skills. In other settings, adult attendees received instruction in special topic literacy classes. For Children: Literacy and support services are provided directly to local elementary schools. For Childcare Professionals: A professional development program for Wake County childcare providers was conducted with funding from Wake County SmartStart. Trainings take place in childcare centers helping teachers improve read-aloud strategies and improving literacy development activities.
TRAINING AND PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT: The Motheread training coordinator and other staff made visits to community colleges and community based organizations across the state. These visits provided an opportunity for program evaluations and recommendations for improvement. Trainings were held across the state through the initiative funded by the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS) office. The majority of participants trained were Adult Basic Education (ABE) faculty. In addition to the trainings funded by the North Carolina Community College System office, other trainings were conducted in North Carolina and in our affiliate network across the country. The goal of these trainings are to increase the frequency and quality of low-literacy parent/childcare provider/early childhood educator reading to children, more visits to the libraries and more books in home and childcare centers. Motheread also continued to be a part of the Early Learning Challenge program in the Eastern counties of North Carolina. They were also involved in the Wake Public Schools Wake Up and Read program.
