Program areas at MFY

HOUSING: Mobilization for Justice works to preserve affordable housing for low-income New Yorkers and prevent homelessness by providing advice, counsel and representation to residents on a wide range of housing issues, including to prevent evictions, obtain repairs, defend succession rights, contest incorrect rents and challenge landlord harassment, among other issues. We also help people preserve their homes by representing them in foreclosure actions.
Economic Justice: MFJ's economic justice practice area works to ensure that low-income New Yorkers can access public benefits (such as disability benefits, SNAP [Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program], and health insurance); ensure people get the wages to which they are entitled and get unemployment benefits and workers compensation where appropriate, and formerly incarcerated people get licenses so they can successfully reenter the workforce. We work with people to avoid crippling debt, and challenge predatory and deceptive lending practices. Because resolving immigration problems is often key to ensuring economic stability, we also provide legal services in this area.
DISABILITY AND AGING RIGHTS: Mobilization for Justice provides civil legal services for people with mental illness living in the community, including those living in Adult Homes and for seniors living in Nursing Homes. We also work on transportation accessibility.
