Program areas at Lions Eye Institute for Transplant and Research
The Lions Eye Institute for Transplant & Research is one of the largest combined nonprofit Eye banks and ocular Research centers in the world. We recover ocular tissue from 62 out of 67 counties in Florida, processing the tissue in our headquarters in ybor city and ensuring it is safe for Transplant, giving the gift of sight to people throughout the united states and in over 80 countries around the world. We recover, process, and distribute over 10,000 corneas per year. The organization's Eye bank service is known for its practice excellence in service quality and innovation constantly developing new processing techniques and products to improve cornea Transplant clinical outcomes. The organization was the first to offer an ultra-thin dsaek preparation (continued on schedule o)procedure, a non-touch hydro-dissection preparation of dmek and pdek grafts, a pre-loaded dsaek graft, and a pre-loaded dmek and pdek graft in a Lions Eye Institute inspired glass tube promoting the smallest incision for implanting dmek and pdek corneas. In our ocular Research center, we are working on long-term studies related to treatments for age-related macular degeneration and glaucoma. We are leading the industry in innovations to advance the Eye banking industry, while working on Eye bank development around the world. In november 2018, the Institute partnered with rti donor services, Inc. (rtids), a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing responsible stewardship of the gift of tissue donation and announced an expanded relationship to increase efficiencies in tissue donation and enhance patients' lives. Through this relationship, each partner focuses on its core area of expertise. The Institute manages all aspects of tissue recovery services for Florida hospitals in rtids' former service area, and rtids focuses specifically on acquiring tissue for processing and distribution. This expansion moved the Institute from exclusively procuring Eye tissue to assuming responsibility for procurement of bone, skin, heart valves, connective tissue and veins used in surgeries and medical Research at hospitals throughout Florida.
Public & professional education - increased awareness of need for tissue procurement with long term goal of increasing the number of donors.
