Program areas at Child Home and Community
Childbirth & newborn care classes - this 8-week program prepares young expectant moms and dads ages 12-26 for childbirth. The goal of this program is to ensure that adolescent mothers receive prenatal care and to increase the opportunity for healthy birth outcomes. Instructors make certain that each young mom has contacted a medical provider. If there are any obstacles which are preventing them from getting care, the instructor offers assistance, including referrals, information on medical assistance and insurance offered in 6 locations.
Community education programs, teen parenthood awareness - a prevention and healthy decision-making workshop for middle and high school students. The program, typically offered in health and Child development classes, provides hands-on learning activities that focus on the costs of life-altering changes that come with an unplanned pregnancy. Babysitting 101 - a 6-hour class that teaches Child care and emergency basiscs to boys and girls ages 11-14. This program charges a fee.
Parenting programs, building the family - chc offers 7 monthly parent support groups where young parents can learn how to be a nurturing parent and support each other through the challenges of being a young mother or father. This program provides chc with an opportunity to monitor each parent's family dynamic and to head off potential problems that threaten the well-being of the parent and Child. School-based program/elect case management and support services provided on a weekly basis to teen mothers and fathers are offered to help them stay in school while pregnant or parenting and graduate on time. As part of this program, a fatherhood coordinator works with dads, and education & career specialists help students develop career plans and job readiness skills leading to self sufficiency.
