Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy promotes excellence in astronomical research and provides innovative and open resources to enable discovery and excellence in research. Aura unifies the astrophysics communities and promotes public understanding of our universe and the benefits of scientific exploration. It oversees and manages the national optical-infrared Astronomy laboratory (noirlab), the national solar observatory (nso), and the vera c. rubin observatory construction (rubin construction or lsstpo) under agreements with the national science foundation.

Aura operates the national science foundation's (nsf) national optical infrared laboratory (noirlab), the national solar observatory (nso), and the vera c. rubin observatory construction (rubin construction or lsstpo) under cooperative agreements with the nsf. Aura also operates the space telescope project (stsci) under an agreement with the national aeronautics and space administration (nasa).
