Program areas at The Caltech Y
Student programs - approximately 20 volunteer student leaders participated in various committees, such as The student executive committee (excomm), y-outdoors, social activism speaker series, and community service committees to help plan and implement approximately 70 programs during The 2022-2023 academic year, including The following:community service programming was The largest category and included The rise tutoring program for middle and high school students in The pasadena unified school district, make-a-difference day volunteer event with 9 local non-profits, The community service and advocacy fair, and The union station adopt-a-meal program. The Caltech Y also provided volunteers for The youth of promise program with The flintridge center, The young legends program, and an outreach event for a local elementary school. In addition, The Caltech Y was able to expand The rise tutoring program to launch an online tutoring component called y-tutor for college students who participated in The rise program as well as steam summer experience program for 3rd-6th grade students. There were 273 community service volunteers, which included 36 alums who volunteered as tutors for The y-tutor program.outdoor events consisted of an on-campus adventure 101 talk on greater hikes in The la area, 2 camping trips to state parks, and 4 day hikes and trips.cultural, educational, and social programs included first aid basics, an origami workshop, and 2 film screenings and conversations with The filmmakers: who killed vincent chin with producer, renee tajima-pea and can we all get along with director, pablo miralles. In addition, The Caltech Y hosted 10 different speakers on various topics ranging from generative ai to The gender gap in mathematics to social justice and stem fields. The Caltech Y also co-sponsored world fest, a celebration of international cultures at Caltech, a science policy trip to Washington, dc, and an alternative spring break trip to hawai'Hawaii'i exploring native hawai'iaHawaiianan approaches to sustainability.other social programming included 6 explore la trips to musicals, concerts, museums, amusement parks, and 3 decompression events before finals for undergraduate students.the Caltech Y distributed The following awards/scholarships to students:3 paul studenski memorial awards8 patrick hummel & harry gray travel awards2 advocating change together awards3 lucy guernsey service awards6 gunilla hastrup memorial adventure award3 rise service awards11 rise scholarships
Friends dinners and activities - friends dinners provide an opportunity for Caltech alumni, students and friends to get acquainted while also being educated by guest speakers. Guest speakers typically range from Caltech faculty to prominent community members. During The 2022-23 year, The Caltech Y held three dinners with guest speakers: dr. eugenia cheng (117 guests), dr. laurie leshin (163 guests), and jane olson (106 guests).
