Program areas at Sunrise Project
Community center: sunrise project offers a free Food pantry with 24/7 no- barriers access to fresh and non-perishable Food as well as hygiene items for anyone in need. The pantry has 700+ visits each month wherein Community members donate and/or collect Food, based on their needs. Sunrise project offers two Community meals, free of charge that feeds up to 350 Community members, with an average of 130 of those meals delivered to those that experience transportation barriers. In 2021, sunrise offered a summer-long youth-run growing roots cafe that served an additional free meal twice a week throughout june and july. The meals were youth cooked and service was run by youth. Most of the youth that participated in the growing roots cafe were in the foster care system between the ages of 12 and 18.
Youth education: growing roots is sunrise project's youth education program that engages youth in the foster care system in activities that teach growing and cooking skills as well as self-care and Community engagement.
Civic engagement: activate your voice is a civic engagement program that connects marginalized Community members to leadership opportunities and social justice learning. In 2021, sunrise project offered a courageous leadership conference that prioritized black, indigenous and people of color in leadership activities. Another activity of this program was sunrise projects involvement with douglas countys climate action plan engagement process. Sunrise project was contracted by douglas county to employ 10 Community members from diverse backgrounds to collect stories of climate change that will ultimately inform the countys climate action plan that is currently being written.
Gardens: sunrise stewards an onsite garden that offers fresh produce to all Community members. Everyone is welcome to garden and harvest at any time. Lawrence fruit tree project: lftp is a program of sunrise project that stewards two free Community orchanrds in east Lawrence. Everyone is welcome to help maintain the orchard and pick fresh produce. Farm to school: sunrise project's farm to school program offers cooking and growing education to students at new york elementary, kennedy elementary and cordley elementary.
