Program areas at La Semilla Food Center
Community education - we provide educational classes and mentoring opportunities to youth and young adults to raise awareness about the links among Food, growing Food, health, local economies, equity, fairness and self-determination. We also train community leaders to lead garden and cooking workshops in their communities.
Farm fresh - we offer access to fresh and healthy produce and products and provide small-scale farmers with aggregation, distribution, market outlets, technical assistance, and training.
Edible education - we work with area schools to promote the enjoyment of the social and cultural activities surrounding Food and foster awareness and understanding of the Food we eat and the environment that sustains people. This is accomplished using a thorough, effective, and exciting approach to integrating cooking and gardening in the classroom.
Community farm - the farm serves as a production, education, and demonstration site guided by agroecology principles as well as a space for cultural and educational projects that promote healing and creation. Food policy - informed by on-the-ground conditions and leadership, we engage in movement building to shape a fair Food system locally, regionally, and nationally. Storytelling policy - we lead a relational foodways cultural strategy that supports power-shifting, uplifts inherently healthy and regenerative traditions, and increases connection with the chihuahuan desert ecosystem.
